Climbing Merapi Mountain

I have many unforgetable experiences, one of them is my experience in climbing Merapi mountain with my friends. Merapi is the second highest mountain in Java Island of Indonesian archipelago after Bromo mountain. It was about 4 p.m when I and some 20 friends left our basecamp to go to Merapi mountain. I didn’t remember when it happened, but I think it just when I was in the early of the third class of Senior high school. We brought some equipment that were needed, food and drink.

We arrived at Bebeng, the slope of Merapi mountain, at about 5 p.m. Then we took a rest before we went to Merapi. At about 8 p.m we had already to continue our adventure. Then we began to walk. If I am not wrong there are three posts in Merapi before we reach the Eagle peak, the peak of Merapi. We reached the first post at about 10.30 p.m. We were very tired and took a rest for about an hour. We met many other climbers and some of them made a camp fire since there was very cold. Then we continued to go to the second post. The route to the second is more difficult than before. We reached the second post at 1 a.m. Some of us got sleep since they were very tired. We felt very tired as if we had no power to continue the climbing anymore, but we had to go on. At about 2 a.m we continued to the third post. The way to the third post was grassy and narrow, and made it more difficullt to be passed. After struggled very hard, finally we could reached the third post at about 4 a.m. we had a rest and cooked some instant noodles since we were very hungry.

It was almost bright when we finished our breakfast and continued to the peak. The route to the peak is extremely hard. There are no plants anymore from the third post because it just stones. Then we started to climb to the eagle peak one by one. We had to be careful because it is very dangerous if we are careless. I didn’t know how far we climbed, but it was still too far to the peak. Finally some of us could reached the peak at about 10 a.m, I was one of them, and some others couldn’t go up anymore since they were very tired. What a beautiful sight we had seen. I think it is the most beautiful sight I ever seen. We could see the peak of Merapi from just about 500 metres far. We could also see the clouds below, our position was higher than clouds. We got many amazing photos. After about an hour we went down.
